Latin I, IV, V and Greek I-II teacher and Junior B soccer coach, Deerfield Academy. His junior and senior-level Latin-Greek courses had only six and four students in them, respectively. He taught us on his own time and taught us well. Three of his ten upper-level students went on to become college professors, one to become the head of the Boston Stock Exchange. He was often seen puffing reflectively on his pipe. The year after we graduated, before we got around to sending him Georges Germent’s The Pipe as a token of appreciation, he took his own life. I have often wondered whether faster action on our part might not have cheered him up and saved his life.
