Viewing Suggestions

The interface is organized into 2 main areas:

LEFT AREA
The left hand area allows you to navigate to the 5 areas of the site: Your main choices are Introduction, Terms, Syllabus, Picture Gallery, and Viewing Suggestions. When you select a link, the right portion of the display will change to reflect your choice. Underneath "Picture Gallery" you may select to view the "Thumnail Index," a complete list of all thumbnails, or you may select a specific section of thumbnails. You may also select "Page Through Pictures" in order to view the pictures one at a time.

RIGHT AREA
This area displays various information, depending upon which links in the left hand table has been clicked on. If the main window has thumbnail images in it, these may be clicked on to access larger representations of the image

Other notes on the interface:

THUMBNAIL IMAGES
Click on these to get larger images. Click on the medium-sized images to see even larger versions of those images. Click on the "next image" link to get to the next medium-sized image in the table. Click Netsacpe's "back" to go back one image. Click "back to thumnails" to get back to the thumbnail representations.

ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY
There are several things you can do to adjust the display for your particular computer and screen size for easier viewing. First, you may adjust the size of the frames by moving the cursor onto the dividing line and leaving it there for a moment until the cursor changes. Once it does, click and drag the lines as necessary. To add to your viewing space, you can eliminate the tool bar from the Netscape display itself by going to the "Options" menu and un-checking the "show toolbar", "show address" & "show directory buttons". Click on the small box on the upper-right hand corner of the Netscape frame then re-drag the frame to fill your screen. To use the "back" command you will now have to use the quick-key (as the "back button" is now hidden) by pressing command (open apple) and [ at the same time on a MAC or alt and the left-arrow key. On a Mac, you can change the resolution of the screen in order to fit more on it by going to the apple in the upper left-hand corner, choose "control panels" then choose "monitors" or "monitor & sound" and adjust as necessary. To change Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0, go to the start icon in the bottom left-hand corner, choose "settings" and then "control panel" Double click on "display". Click on the "settings" tab. Move the slider on the right to the right. Click on test. Wait a little while and then when you can, click on "apply" NOTE: changing the resolution may shrink the text enough to make it hard to read and/or effect the color quality.

DOWNLOADING IMAGES
To download any image on this site (or any other site), navigate until you see the image in the Netscape window that you want to download (you do not need to be able to see all of it, just a part will do). Click down on the image, keeping the button down until you see a menu appear (in Windows, use the right mouse key for this). Choose "save to local" or "save image as". Save to your disk or to the temp drive. (NOTE: some of the largest images may not fit on a disk. You will need to save these on the temp drive and use an image-editing program such as Photoshop to crop or shrink the image.)

SENDING MAIL FROM THE LAB
In trying to send e-mail, if you get the message: "Your e-mail has not been set" you need to tell Netscape which account it should use to send the message. To do this, go to the "Options" menu at the top of the Netscape window and choose "Mail & News preferences." Click on the "servers" tab. Set "Outgoing Mail" to your e-mail address in the form: cmcvax.mckenna.edu. Do the same for incoming mail. Set your POP3 User Name to your correct username (usually your first initial immediately followed by your last name). Now choose the "identity" tab and fill in your name, your email and your reply-to address. Hit Okay and try to send the mail again.
